To meet the growing demand for efficient handling of large BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) units within production facilities, storage areas, and outdoor yards, Haitai Crane provided a 60 ton BESS battery handling container straddle carrier solution for an energy storage company in Vietnam.
The equipment has a rated lifting capacity of 60 tons and a span of 4.8 meters. It is powered by a battery system, while the main operating mechanisms are driven hydraulically. A hydraulic lifting system is incorporated into the carrier, with an adjustable overall height that allows the equipment to adapt to different workshop doorways, internal passages, and operating areas. This configuration was developed specifically to address the practical requirements of moving large BESS units in and out of the customer’s workshop.
Compared with fixed lifting equipment, the carrier offers greater mobility and flexibility in different working areas. It can handle and transfer heavy BESS units in confined indoor spaces, while also supporting outdoor lifting, loading and unloading from transport vehicles, and one-over-one stacking operations.
BESS units are generally heavy, large in size, and often handled as complete systems. During production, transportation, and installation, this places higher demands on the lifting equipment in terms of load capacity, operating stability, and maneuverability.
The 60 ton BESS handling container straddle carrier supplied for this project features a self-propelled design, allowing it to enter BESS production and storage areas directly and move equipment between designated locations under its own power. The hydraulic lifting system provides controlled lifting and lowering of the BESS unit, reducing the customer’s dependence on fixed lifting positions.
The adjustable overall height is another important part of the design. While maintaining the required lifting capacity, the equipment can be adapted to the height restrictions of the workshop, doorways, and internal passages. This enables the carrier to move between indoor and outdoor working areas and handle BESS units across different stages of the customer’s operation.
To accommodate BESS units with different dimensions, the straddle carrier is equipped with a multi-point frame-type lifting spreader.
The frame spreader uses multiple lifting points to distribute the load more appropriately during lifting. Depending on the dimensions and lifting positions of the load, suitable lifting points can be selected to achieve a stable connection between the load and the lifting system. This arrangement allows the carrier to handle heavy equipment with different dimensions and structural configurations.
In addition to BESS energy storage systems, the multi-point lifting arrangement provides a degree of versatility for handling other large and heavy equipment. This gives the customer greater flexibility for future material handling requirements.
The complete machine is powered by a rechargeable battery system, eliminating the need for an external power supply or fixed power cables during normal operation. This allows the equipment to move freely between indoor workshops and outdoor working areas.
The main operating mechanisms are hydraulically driven, with lifting, travel, and related movements controlled through the hydraulic system. The hydraulic configuration offers a compact arrangement and stable power transmission, providing the capacity and control required when handling 60 ton BESS units.
The battery-powered design also avoids the exhaust emissions associated with conventional fuel-powered equipment during indoor operation. This makes the carrier particularly suitable for BESS production workshops and storage areas where a cleaner working environment is preferred.
The 60 ton BESS handling straddle carrier uses a worm gear slewing reducer for steering and supports multiple travel and steering modes, including:
These steering modes allow the operator to select the most suitable travel pattern according to the available working space.
Inside the workshop, where passages may be narrow or the equipment needs to change direction within a limited area, lateral travel, diagonal travel, and in-place steering can be used to reposition the carrier. In outdoor loading and unloading areas, the operator can select the appropriate steering mode according to the positions of the transport vehicle, BESS unit, and surrounding site layout.
This multi-directional travel capability reduces the need for repeated repositioning and provides greater flexibility throughout BESS lifting and handling operations.
The carrier was designed to meet the customer’s requirements for handling BESS units inside the workshop and can enter the production facility directly for lifting and transfer operations.
With its adjustable overall height, the equipment can be configured to suit the height of workshop entrances and internal spaces. This allows the carrier to enter and exit the facility while carrying out controlled lifting, lowering, and horizontal movement of BESS units.
Unlike equipment that relies on fixed rails, the straddle carrier can move according to the actual production layout. It can transfer BESS units between production areas, storage areas, inspection zones, and other designated locations, providing the customer with a more flexible method of internal material handling.
In addition to indoor operations, the straddle carrier can also be used for outdoor BESS lifting and handling.
During the receiving process, the carrier can enter the vehicle loading area, lift a BESS unit from the transport vehicle, and transfer it to the designated location. The same equipment can also be used for loading BESS units onto transport vehicles when they are ready for shipment.
For BESS storage and internal yard handling, the equipment can also perform one-over-one stacking operations, allowing units to be repositioned efficiently between designated storage locations.
As a result, the equipment is not limited to a single lifting task. It combines lifting, short-distance handling, vehicle loading and unloading, and storage-yard handling into one mobile heavy-duty solution for energy storage applications.
With a rated lifting capacity of 60 tons, the carrier can handle large BESS energy storage systems and other heavy equipment used in the customer’s operations.
The 4.8-meter span provides sufficient clearance for handling BESS units while maintaining a configuration suitable for indoor workshop operations.
The equipment is fitted with a hydraulic lifting mechanism, and its overall height can be adjusted according to the customer’s workshop and access conditions, allowing the carrier to move in and out of the facility as required.
One carrier can cover a range of BESS handling tasks, including indoor lifting and transfer as well as outdoor lifting, vehicle loading and unloading, and storage-yard handling.
The multi-point frame-type spreader can be configured according to the dimensions of different heavy loads, expanding the range of equipment that the carrier can handle.
The carrier supports straight traveling, 90° transverse traveling, crab steering, carousel steering, inside steering and outside steering, allowing it to operate effectively across different site layouts and in areas with limited maneuvering space.
The battery-powered and hydraulically driven configuration removes the dependence on fixed power connections and makes the carrier suitable for mobile operations in both BESS workshops and outdoor handling areas.
This 60 ton BESS handling straddle carrier project in Vietnam was developed around the specific challenges associated with energy storage equipment, including heavy loads, varying dimensions, limited indoor space, and the need to carry out operations both inside and outside the workshop. The lifting capacity, overall height, lifting attachment, steering system, and mobility were all configured with these requirements in mind.
With its 60 ton lifting capacity, 4.8 meter span, adjustable overall height, multi-point frame spreader, and multi-mode steering system, the carrier can support multiple stages of BESS handling, from receiving and outdoor unloading to workshop lifting, internal transfer, and storage-yard operations.
For energy storage companies that need to move large BESS units through restricted workshop spaces, this mobile heavy-duty handling solution with adjustable height and multi-directional steering can reduce reliance on fixed lifting facilities while providing a more flexible way to manage BESS production, storage, and logistics operations.
